Quelle des Wortes ist lat. socculus »kleiner Schuh, leichte Sandale«, eine Verkleinerungsbildung zu lat. soccus »leichter griechischer Schuh« (daraus unser Lehnwort ↑ Socke), dessen Bedeutung ins Roman. übertragen wurde.
